Students will build upon the knowledge they have gained throughout their studies drawing particularly on their understanding of small scale research design and the selection and justification of appropriate research methods and the analysis of both qualitative and quantitative data. This further experience of research and enquiry will allow students to apply the insights about the relationship between policy, practice and research gained in EDUC 2003. Students do not have to undertake empirical research in the field, but may elect to undertake desk based or archival research for example. Students also have further opportunities to apply and extend knowledge of current policy and practice in the field of childhood studies already acquired. In evaluating and applying theoretical models and frameworks to practice in the field, students will be expected to make reference to literature in the field which reflect current thinking on policy and provision and to critically reflect upon published research.
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. pursue in depth a topic, issue or research question from a childhood, education/care and culture perspective including an evaluation of some theoretical models;
2. apply a theoretical framework to practice in the field of childhood, education / care and culture through independent research and enquiry;
3. synthesise their theoretical framework and findings in written dissertation form.
The subject of the dissertation will be in the field of childhood, education / care and culture of children with the focus determined by consultation between student and supervisor.

Tutorials - up to 6 hours of individual tuition per student by arrangement with the dissertation supervisor.

Progress will be monitored through contributions to lectures/seminars, and assignments.
